Where Thought Cannot Enter
—Daily Reflections Inspired by the Teachings of Nondual Luminaries
“The mind cannot understand freedom because freedom is before the mind.” Papaji (H. W. L. Poonja)
[Poem] The Edge of Thought
The mind reaches outward
to understand.
It gathers concepts
and arranges conclusions.
It names experience
and calls the naming truth.
Every mystery becomes
something to contain.
The known expands
through memory and comparison.
Thought circles endlessly
around what cannot be grasped.
Even freedom becomes
an object to define.
Yet what is freedom
before it is imagined.
What remains
prior to every concept.
If attention no longer seeks
to capture what is,
if thought is allowed
to fall silent on its own,
a deeper clarity appears.
Freedom is not understood.
It is not achieved.
No idea can contain it.
No image can reflect it.
The mind arises within it
like a wave within the sea.
Awareness remains prior
to every movement of thought.
Unborn.
Uncontained.
Not known by the mind
but known as being itself.
Only the Self
before every thought of self.
[Inquiry] What is present before the mind begins to name what is?
